  5. This is an NNTP newsreader for Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows/NT.  You
  6. can use it to read and post Usenet News, and send email (via SMTP or MAPI)
  7.  
  8. Requirements:
  9.  
  10. For WINSOCK (v1.0 or higher) compliant TCP/IP stacks (called WINSOCK.DLL):
  11. (using gwinsock.dll)
  12.    A WINSOCK compliant TCP/IP product such as Trumpet, PC/TCP,
  13.    NetManage TCP/IP, Microsoft LanManager 2.2, DEC Pathworks 5.0.
  14.    Make sure WINSOCK.DLL is in your path before starting Windows.

  18. For NON-WINSOCK TCP/IP stacks:
  19. (using pwksock.dll)
  20.    A DEC Pathworks v4.1 or Microsoft LanManager 2.1a compatible
  21.    WSOCKETS.DLL Dynamic Link Library.  Make sure Windows can find it.
  22.    (set your PATH environment variable).

  24.    An NNTP News Server.  It *must* support one of the following
  25.    NNTP extenstions:
  26.  
  27.     XHDR (most news servers can do this)
  28.     or
  29.     XOVER (InternetNetNews is an example of a news server that does XOVER)
  30.    WinVN will use XOVER if your server supports it.
  31.  
  32.    A 'NEWSRC' file.  An example is provided.  You *must* have the
  33.    file there; WinVN won't write one out just randomly.  It can be
  34.    empty.
  35.  
  36.    A 'WINVN.INI' file.  Edit this file to point to your news server,
  37.    or you can later change parameters from within WinVN.
  38.  
  39.    An optional 'WINVN' environment variable, telling WinVN where to find
  40.    its two configuration files: 'WINVN.INI' and 'NEWSRC'.  You have to
  41.    set this variable BEFORE you start up windows.
  42.  
  43.    You can also tell WINVN where to find the two files by giving
  44.    command-line options with the 'Properties' menu under the Program Manager
  45.    - here are a couple of examples
  46.     (specify a directory to look in)
  47.     winvn.exe d:\winvn\myserver
  48.     (specify each of the two files separately)
  49.     winvn.exe e:\winvn\myserver\winvn.ini u:\users\rushing\newsrc
  50.    [I use this to set up different icons for different news servers.]

  52. The on-line documentation no longer matches the program exactly.
  53. Lots of new undocumented features have been added, but most should
  54. be obvious.

  91. An easy way to keep up on winvn developments is to point your
  92. newsreader at 'niven.ksc.nasa.gov' (128.159.4.21).  There should be a
  93. single newsgroup, (mail.winvn) which is a gatewayed version of the
  94. mailing list.  Announcements and discussions of common problems can
  95. be found here.  It's very likely the best place to get the scoop on
  96. _your_ problem.    If mail gets much worse, we may consider starting 
  97. an ALT group.
